Olbia is one of the main gateways to Sardinia and a convenient base for exploring the beaches and towns of Gallura. The city is compact and easy to navigate, with a mix of natural spots and small historical sites.
Here’s a simple three-day itinerary for visitors who want to make the most of their stay without wasting time.
---
Day 1 — Historic Centre and Nearby Archaeological Sites
Basilica of San Simplicio
The most representative building in Olbia. A granite Romanesque church, essential in style but well preserved. A short visit takes around 15–20 minutes.
Olbia Archaeological Museum
Located on the waterfront, it features Roman artefacts, remains of ancient ships, and the history of the city’s port. Useful if you want context about Olbia’s origins.
Walk Through the Historic Centre
Corso Umberto and the pedestrian area offer cafés, gelato shops and restaurants. It’s a small district, easy to explore even with children.
Sacred Well of Sa Testa
A 10-minute drive from the centre. It’s a Nuragic sacred well — a short but interesting visit if you want to understand Sardinia’s ancient history.
Where to eat nearby: Corso Umberto and Piazza Regina Margherita have a good variety of restaurants and trattorias.

Day 2 — The Best Beaches Near Olbia
The beaches around Olbia are suitable for families and couples. The water is shallow and parking is usually close to the shore.
Pittulongu
The most popular city beach. Easy to reach, with full facilities and beach bars.
Bados
Just a few minutes from Pittulongu. Clear water, fine sand, shallow seabed.
Parking is easier early in the morning.
Mare e Rocce / Il Pellicano
Two nearby beaches. Less crowded than Pittulongu but still very accessible.
Porto Istana
About 10–12 minutes from Olbia. Probably the most scenic beach in the nearby area, with white sand and views of Tavolara island.
Practical tip:
In peak season, it’s best to arrive between 8:00 and 9:30 to avoid traffic and limited parking.

Day 3 — Tavolara or a Trip Towards San Teodoro / Golfo Aranci
Option A: Tavolara Island
Boats depart frequently from Porto San Paolo during summer. Once on the island:
beach
short walking paths
restaurants open in high season
A simple excursion suitable for all visitors.
Option B: Cala Brandinchi + Lu Impostu (San Teodoro area)
20–25 minutes by car. These are famous beaches with shallow turquoise water and very fine sand.
In peak season, access may be limited and require advance booking.
Option C: Golfo Aranci and Dolphins
From late spring to autumn, dolphins are often spotted near the industrial port area.
In Golfo Aranci you’ll also find Terza Spiaggia, an easy and family-friendly beach.
